About Harold Burkhart

Harold M. Burkhart, M.D., is a Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In addition, he is the Director of the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgical Program at the Oklahoma Children's Hospital. He holds the CHF Brandon Weeden Chair of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery and the Paul H. and Doris Eaton Travis Chair in Thoracic Surgery. Prior to joining the University of Oklahoma in 2014, he was a Professor of Surgery at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. He completed his general surgery training at Indiana University, cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Mayo Clinic and a congenital cardiothoracic surgical fellowship at Toronto Hospital for Sick Children.

Dr. Burkhart's primary clinical interest is pediatric cardiothoracic surgery with an emphasis on neonatal cardiac surgery. Complex reconstructions in single ventricle heart defects including hypoplastic left heart syndrome are of particular interest. In addition, he has an active clinical interest in understanding the role of stem cell therapy in congenital heart disease.
